You asked. We answered!
We've all been waiting for this, and now it's here!
In February, we launched 5G Business Internet in Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, PEI and Newfoundland. Our customers are reporting average download speeds of up to 100 Mbps and the freedom to work, video conference, and stream to their heart’s content.
We had a chance to sit down with our fixed wireless expert, Pat, and get the answers to the most common questions we receive about 5G. Here's what he had to say:
What does 5G mean?
5G stands for “fifth generation” and is the fifth evolution of mobile network technology. It means faster, more consistent Internet speeds - double our fastest fixed wireless product with speeds up to 100 Mbps – and sometimes even faster.
What is the difference between 5G and 4G?
5G uses spectrum in a more efficient and advanced way. More data is transmitted using the same amount of spectrum, which allows for faster speeds to be delivered to the home than ever before. In short, you can go faster on 5G thanks to the advances in technology.
How does 5G work?
5G works on the most advanced mobile broadband wireless standard that’s available today to offer high data transmission and low latency between the wireless network and the customer’s device, typically a mobile or fixed wireless home Internet connection at the customer’s home. It works the same way the older technology did, by transmitting a signal from one of Xplore’s tower sites to equipment installed in a home, but with 5G it’s faster and with lower latency.
How is 5G installed? Will I need new equipment?
Our 5G service does require an upgraded device to provide faster speeds to your home. This involves scheduling a quick professional install where a skilled local technician will visit and make the upgrade. Our installers do all of the work so our customers don’t have to.
Where is 5G available?
5G with Xplore is currently available in Ontario, Manitoba, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland with plans to expand to more sites and provinces through the end of 2023 and 2024.
What areas will get 5G next?
We’re excited to expand 5G service to more sites in Ontario and into Alberta in the back half of 2023.
How will this new technology benefit Xplore’s existing customers?
The number one benefit that 5G will provide is urban-like broadband speeds in rural areas. We’re very excited to bring speeds up to 100 Mbps. In addition, it has the lowest latency, which will result in the best video conferencing and real-time gaming experience for our customers.
Existing customers who are satisfied with their current 4G service and choose not to upgrade will also benefit from our 5G deployment as we optimize our spectrum between the two platforms and see more available capacity and less network congestion on each network. This will result in more consistent speeds for all fixed wireless customers over time.
What is Xplore doing to prioritize our existing customers?
All existing customers who are within our 5G footprint will be invited to upgrade to our 5G service as soon as it becomes available in their area.
Can I sign up today? How?
Yes, give us a call at 1-855-638-7381 and our team will be happy to set you up.
What can I do at home on a 5G Internet connection?
A 5G Internet connection will allow you to stream videos, do video calling and browse the web with multiple users at the same time in your home and office. With speeds up to 100 Mbps, multiple applications can be used at the same time all with a strong, consistent connection to provide you the best experience from your wireless home Internet.
How reliable is 5G?
Very reliable. 5G will be our most reliable and consistent wireless home Internet product thanks to the evolution of wireless technology.
What if I can’t get 5G now?
If 5G is not available at your current address, we still have a range of excellent broadband applications for your home including speeds up to 50 Mbps through Xplore Business’s fixed wireless and satellite service. Give us a call at 1-855-638-7381 to determine what product will be best to meet your needs.
How do I choose between 5G, fibre and satellite?
Fibre provides Internet access directly to your home with a dedicated fibre optic line and provides the fastest speeds to Canadian businesses today. Where available, fibre is the best Internet solution.
Where fibre is not available, we have you covered with 5G Business Internet or high-speed Satellite Internet.
We're excited about the new speeds we're able to offer our customers, and we look forward to continuing to provide excellent service as we expand into other provinces.
